REFLECTIONS

On this International Day of Social Justice, I honour the legacy of my great-uncle, Ronald Segal who inspired me to create Opera for Peace through a mutual love of this art form.

He did not observe injustice from a distance. He confronted apartheid with words, action, and an unshakeable belief in human equality. He understood that silence protects oppression and that culture, when it refuses to comply, becomes resistance.
His example taught me that justice is not a commemorative date. It is a position and a responsibility. A choice we make publicly and repeatedly.

🇿🇦 Returning to South Africa with Opera for Peace is never just professional. It continues a dialogue across generations. Each time we reconnect with our Emerging Artists and encounter new voices, I am reminded that art is not neutral. It either sustains power, or questions it.

Opera carries memory, exile, identity. When young artists step onto the stage, they claim visibility and make their mark on the world.
To me, supporting talent across borders is about dignity, representation, and who gets to be heard. Culture is not adjacent to justice. It is one of its most powerful instruments.
